As the calendar turned to 2025, many in the industry are asking the same thing: “What are the biggest trends for the year ahead?” There are numerous, in fact. Automation, especially as it relates to the ongoing workforce crisis, digital printing, smart labeling, such as RFID and NFC, and, of course, sustainability. The environment will continue to be one of the biggest drivers of change in labels and packaging for years to come, especially as major brands continue to roll out lofty sustainability goals.

There is, however, one tried-and-true aspect of label printing that will continue to propel this industry forward – one that has never changed: delivering high-quality, eye-catching labels. Even with so many trends top-of-mind for suppliers and converters alike, the goal is still an excellent label at the end of the day.

The closing months of 2024 featured multiple award announcements. For example, TLMI announced its annual winners in a wide range of categories. From food and beverage to automotives labels, the entries featured outstanding quality.

The first issue of L&NW is dedicated to just that – quality. In our Wine Labels (page 50) and Foils & Embellishments (page 66) features, we focus on the technologies that are enabling converters to produce labels that stand out on crowded shelves. With more SKUs than ever before and companies jockeying for space, the right design or enhancement can make all the difference in the few seconds consumers have when scanning the shelves.

The same can be said for online purchasing. As e-commerce continues to boom, the label – even on a computer screen or smartphone – can sway the consumer by conveying luxury and elegance. Many purchases are made, specifically in wine labeling, because of the label.

“Foil and embellishment additions to labels give the illusion of being more attractive and luxurious,” says Nerissa Ignacio-Littman, creative director, K Laser. “They create more stimulation for both visual and tactile senses and increase visibility for products on the shelf so that they can better stand out.”

L&NW’s other features delve into diecutting and static control, which can also have a significant impact on the quality of the label. “For converters, automation in diecutting solutions … allow precise control over cutting depth, ensuring optimal results for intricate or demanding jobs,” explains Andre Gysbers, head of marketing and data analytics, Wink. “These advancements reduce downtime and enhance consistency, benefiting both productivity and quality.”

While there are numerous trends that will be front and center at various industry events in 2025, no one should lose sight of the fact that the label’s ability to draw attention is still king. And the advancement of automation, sustainability, digital printing, and a host of other trends will continue to drive that goal. I can’t wait to see what converters produce next.
